‘MALAYSIAN NIGHT’: MUSICA E CINEMA DELLA MALESIA ALL’ISOLA DEL CINEMA IN ROMA
Mercoledì 11 luglio 2018, dalle 20:00 alle 21:45, l’Associazione Culture del Mondo e il Commonwealth Club of Rome presenta, con il supporto e la collaborazione dell’Ambasciata della Malesia in Italia e dell’Isola del Cinema e sponsorizzato da Tourism Malaysia, presentano, “Malaysian Night”, una serata pensata per avvicinare il pubblico romano alla ricchezza culturale della Malesia.
La serata vedrà il concerto di Alena Murang, artista italo-malese ed una delle prime ed uniche donne del sape, lo strumento a corde tradizionale della regione del Borneo, e la proiezione del corto Never Was the Shade, vincitore del BMW Shorties 2017, del regista Lim Kean Hian (in lingua malese e cantonese, sottotitoli in italiano e inglese). Prima del concerto, Murang presenterà il sape e la sua terra d’origine, il Borneo.

Il Borneo, con la sua natura dirompente e rigogliosa, il sapere ancestrale delle sue innumerevoli culture indigene e soprattutto di quella Kelabit: sono questi gli elementi che riecheggiano nella musica di Alena Murang, musicista di sape, lo strumento a corde tradizionale malese. Cresciuta in Borneo ed appartenente alla cultura Kelabit, Murang è una delle prime ed uniche donne al mondo esperta di sape, storicamente appannaggio dei soli uomini, avendone appreso l’arte dai maestri Kelabit sin dalla più tenera età, assieme al canto e alle danze tradizionali, anche della popolazione Kenyah. Combinando ispirazioni tratte dalla cultura delle sue radici con le sue esperienze di viaggio e di vita, Murang dà luogo a sonorità suggestive ed incantevoli, nuove per il pubblico romano.
Il cortometraggio pluripremiato del giovane regista Lim Kean Hian racconta il confronto tra due fratelli a seguito della morte del padre. Così, anche l’ambiente freddo e sterile di una stanza d’ospedale diviene un luogo in cui si dipanano meditazioni su questioni assai diverse, ma tutte accomunate dalla loro grande importanza, dal loro essere al cuore dell’esperienza umana: la famiglia, la fratellanza, il conflitto che può nascere in esse, la religione e le relazioni che intrecciamo col prossimo.

‘MALAYSIAN NIGHT’: A CELEBRATION OF MALAYSIAN MUSIC AND CINEMA AT THE ISOLA DEL CINEMA, ROME
Wednesday 11 July, from 20:00 to 21:45, the Culture del Mondo Association and the Commonwealth Club of Rome – with the support and collaboration of the Embassy of Malaysia to Italy and Isola del Cinema and the sponsorship of Tourism Malaysia, will be organizing “Malaysian Night”, an evening to foster awareness among the Roman public of Malaysia’s cultural wealth.
The event will feature a concert by Malaysian-Italian Alena Murang, playing the Sape, a traditional Malaysian instrument from Borneo, and a screening of the short film Never Was the Shade, winner of the BMW Shorties in 2017 by director Lim Kean Hian (in Malay and Catonese; with English and Italian subtitles). Before the concert, Murang will introduce the sape and her land, Borneo (in English).

Borneo – its luxuriant nature and the ancestral knowledge of its innumerable indigenous cultures, especially that of the Kelabit people: these are the notes that reverberate in Alena Murang’s music. Raised in Borneo and of Kelabit heritage, Murang is one of the first and only female virtuosos of sape’, the traditional Malaysian string instrument historically reserved to men alone. A multifaceted artist, Murang learned the art of the sape’ from her Kelabit elders at a tender age, along with traditional songs and dances, also of the Kenyah people. Combining inspiration drawn from her cultural roots with her travel and life experiences, Murang gives rise to suggestive and enchanting sounds, unprecedented for the Roman public.
The award-winning short film by young director Lim Kean Hian tells the story of a confrontation between two brothers, following the death of their father. In his subtle tone, even the cold, sterile environment of a hospital room becomes a place where meditations can materialize on questions that are diverse from one another, but that all share great importance, because they lie at the heart of the human experience: family, brotherhood, the conflict that can arise therein, religion and the relationships that we build with one another.
